The ritual of Jai Mala, also called Var Mala, is when the bride welcomes and greets her groom by putting a flower garland around his neck. Fun fact : if you translate the ceremony literally it says, “The groom is “attacked” with flowers by the bride!”
This is a big moment in the Hindu ceremony because it is the first ritual that signifies that bride accepts the groom as her husband. Most wedding ceremonies have a tradition where the bride and groom exchange circular items, ie: rings, necklaces, or garlands. The circle represents that there is no beginning and no end of the union that is being created. The significance of the exchange of Jai Malas is the same as the exchange of wedding rings!
